REVIEWS:
The City Bakery is a place I hate to love, but I can’t help it the food is so dam good, what can I say I am a foodie. The City Bakery is pretty famous for their treats, once had the hot chocolate and thought I was going to die, it all chocolate with a splash of milk. It is so thick and rich – dare I say it – I could not finish it. Love this place to death and whenever I have Out-of-Towners staying with me we have to go for a little treat. And of course I spend way too much on a coffee and a cookie, but once in a while is not so bad, right? This time I thought I go and try to budget myself and see if $10 can fill the old belly, my options where meager and not so appetizing.
RANTS & RAVES:
Lunch in the City Bakery is a bit hard to find good cheap eats; I once got the salad bar (not looking at the price) and ended up paying a hefty fee at the counter. It will cost you $12.50 lbs for the salad bar, which is pretty outrageous however it did fill me up and they have great veggies that other salad bars do not offer. For example halibut, pesto soba noodle salad, heirloom tomatoes with extra virgin olive oil and lots of other goodies that all the snotty foodies love. Saddly I passed the salad bar, headed for the wretched looking pizzas that were under 2 heating lamps, I saw 2 different kinds of pizzas one for $5.50 cheese and the other for $7.50 cheese w/ cheery tomatoes. The obvious choice was the $5.50, I thought how comical it was that an establishment like The City Bakery can charge and extra 2 dollars more for sprinkling some cherry tomatoes on top of a personal pan pizza that looked like it was microwave 5 hours ago. Needless the say it was not so HOT, it really did taste like it came out of the microwave but in their defense the pizza sauce had some onions in it. I saved the best for last… dessert. For those of you who have yet to indulge in one of their $3.50 cookies you have do it at least once. For those of you who have tried and are stick of paying $3.50 for a cookie then you have to score the 2 for 1. The 2 cookies for 1 dollar is the amazing peanut butter cookies, once in your mouth it will just dissolve, I have no idea how they made them but it is really good, and do be careful not to crush the little things in your hands, they are quit delicate. While searching for my other favorite 2 for 1 the counter dude informed me that they are seasonal, in the winter time if you see the espresso drop cookies get them while they last, in it are chopped espresso beans w/sprinkles of sugar cane crystals. My total came to $6.50 came way under the budget, but I didn’t really enjoy it that much. Next time I think I'll bring a scale so I won’t go over board with the salad bar.
