EATERY:
Chicken N Rice Stand
LOCATION:
6 Ave & 53 St/5 Ave & 30 St
REVIEWS:
I've eaten at many chicken and rice stands over the course of my cab-driving. Rafiqi's stands have good food, but the best stands by far are the ones at 6 Ave & 53 St and 5 Ave & 30 St, both available after 8 PM. $6 will get you a plate of chicken and rice and chopped pita bread at 6th and 53rd. Avoid the block-long line at the stand on the SW corner and go across the street to the one on the SE corner--run by the same people, same food with a much shorter line. Go easy on the hot sauce, it's liquid fire. The stand at 5 Ave and 30 Street is less popular but also has great food and more variety. $4 gets you a plate of chicken over rice or pita, along with fried fish, french fries, peppers, tomatos and onions, falafel and/or fried eggplant, depending on how early you get there. For a buck more you can upgrade to two chicken shish-ka-bobs instead of the regular chicken. Much friendlier service than at 6 Ave & 53 St, where the cooks sometimes have more attitude than the doorman at a Meat Market nightclub.
