REVIEWS:
For good cheap Indian buffets on the West Side, you gotta go to 10 Ave. There's a $6 buffet at the Punjabi deli on 10th Ave between 27th and 28th Sts with rice, tandoori chicken, salad, two vegetarian dishes. Ask the counterman for two rotis and they'll cook you two fresh, hot pieces. Tuesdays and Saturdays they have the best boneless chicken tikka masala. For $5--$5.50 you can get more variety at the Desi Deli on 10th Ave between 49th and 50th Streets. They have two types of chicken, one goat dish, and at least 6 vegetarian items along with raita (Indian yogurt dish) and salad. Request your choice of fresh roti, tandoori roti, or naan. The food at both places is delicious and much lighter, home-style fare than you find at most Indian restaurants in the city. For strictly vegetarian food you can go to the Punjabi deli on Houston St between Aves A and 1 Ave. Be warned, it's already been discovered by many residents of Alphabet City. The food is good, service friendly, but the place is tiny with standing room only and the roti is pre-cooked and warmed in a microwave.
