REVIEWS:
Thanks to Cheap Ass Food reader Vi for her recommendation, we finally find a great cheapass restaurant that specializes in Taiwanese street food. Located in the 90 degrees Doyers street in C-Town Manhattan, the Excellent Pork Chop House's specialties is the combo of Sparerib Soup + Preserved Vegetables over rice ($5.75). The soup comes in a small container with pure sparerib broth. They put the sparerib in the porcelain container with water, cover the lid, submerge it into a waterbath and slowly simmer overnight. The super slow cook process extracts all the best flavor from the ribs and create a very clear broth. Indeed, the ribs are so slow cooked it become so soft that one can actually chew the bones. The soup has a very intense meaty flavor. The Rice Bowl consists of chopped up preserved vegetables, seasoned pork meat and long napa. The taste is just right that makes it the perfect supplement to balance the strong flavor of the meat broth. Be sure to mix it altogether before you eat it. Young got the Wonton Soup ($3) that there are more skin than the meat inside. The broth is very basic, healthy and simple. We also got the Smelt With Chili"- Small Dry Fish and Hot Chili Pepper ($3.20) as the appetizer. Overall, the taste of this place is, how should I put it, very honest.
RANTS & RAVES:
Try their famous Pork Chop, it is indeed, EXCELLENT! For adventurous eater, try the "Four God Soup", a slow cook pork lung soup with Chinese "Four God" medicinal herb. Get the photo picture book to see how the food you are gonna get look like, you will find a cool picture of the chef. This place is the direct oversea store of the Taipei Wu Chang Street King of Sparerib, so this is as authentic as it can get.
