REVIEWS:
I have come to the realization that I have been eating the wrong weenies for the past two years, why I am not sure… well maybe because they are cheap and readily available on every block of Manhattan. But besides those 2 reasons I can’t think of any gastronomical reasons to why. It took me 2 years to figure it out but I have found the place for your sausage/links fix in Manhattan, Hallo Berlin (cart) located on 54th St and 5th Ave. Not readily available, Hallo Berlin is located all the way in Midtown, and only one cart per island unfortunately (the one and only). Greeted by the Babiel brother, the one with creamy baby blue eyes and a great wonderful simile, was ready to cook us some home cooked eats. We got the “Mercedes” with the works- bratwurst with cabbage, onions, and house mustard served on a crusty roll for $5 and the “Super” which is a Bavarian meatball hero with cabbage, onions, and house mustard served on a crusty roll for $4. If you’ve never had bratwurst before you’re in for a treat, a sausage prepared with pork, beef, and sometimes veal was juicy and tender with a bite. If you love meat you’ll love their bratwurst. And the Bavarian meatball – for-get-a-bout-it! 3 large sized meatballs made of pork and beef, had a nice kick to it, I think came mostly from black pepper and it was perfectly dressed with the sour and crunchy pickled cabbage. For indecisive person they have the “Dictator Special”. Everyday they rotate different dictators like Mao (maybe Hitler?) Today the dictator is Stalin, which the special ($9) will get you One Berliner Frank, One Bratwurst, topped with German Fries, Red & White Cabbage, Sauteed Onion and a Small Soup. You have no choice to choose which sausage you are gonna get. Or you can get the Democracy specials ($10) which you got Two Wurst Topped with German Fries OR Potato Salad + The Works, Red Wine Cabbage, Sauteed onion and Two Bavarian Meatballs!
