This weekend was the Norwegian Seaman's Church Christmas Fair, located in Midtown 317 East 52nd St. (1st and 2nd Aves.) It was a nice affair, with beautiful items for sale from Christmas ornaments, woodcrafts to Danish cookies/treats but my reason for stopping by was smorgasbord. Downstairs where the cafeteria is located, I found my self drooling over the nice spread of goodies. To be honest I am not familiar with most Norwegian food, for example the egg with herring never eaten in my life. However, I know herring is the equivalent of hamburgers to Norwegians, so I had to give it a try. An open-faced sandwich w/ herring and hard-boiled egg ($4), the herring tasted a bit like sardines that had been pickled with sugar and dill... I found it interesting, might have to try once more before I truly know how I feel about it. I also sampled some homemade waffles ($2) with some strawberry jam very nice, indeed. This may seem like an unlikely place to review for our site, but luckily I found out about it thanks to Dave (of eating in translations www.eatingintranslation.com). Every Wednesday the church offers an all-you-can-eat Norwegian buffet for $17. So don’t feel so left out if you missed the fair you can still sample Norwegian food every Wednesday.
