REVIEWS:
Sophie’s is a good hearty Cuban food eatery one can find in the financial district, started by the Luna family (not Cuban, Peruvian) has deep roots in New York City. Originally the first Sophie’s opened in 1997 near the World Trade Center, unfortunately 9/11 claimed the first business, but the family worked hard and now own five that are open in Manhattan. Their business philosophy is based on fresh, tasty food with big portions served by friendly people and I think they live up to the their word. I got the daily special of roast pork (pernil) $9 with yellow rice and black beans, with a side of green hot sauce. The portions were huge definitely enough for two, the rice and beans were great but I found the pork a little bland. Not too much flavor, but then again roast pork is roast pork. The homemade hot sauce was great tasted a little tangy and creamy, I think it was made with mayo, which was an interesting take on hot sauce. Overall Sophie’s is good eating that is going to fill the belly.
RANTS & RAVES:
The owners of Sophie’s are Peruvian, I wonder what would happen if they opened up a Peruvian restaurant? I found a website that said Peruvians eat roasted guinea pig and shish kebabs made from beef hearts ( http://www.traveladdicts.connectfree.co.uk/Peru/food.htm ) that sounds way more exciting then a cubano.
