REVIEWS:
McSorley's Old Ale House is the oldest bar in New York and still standing. A watering hole since 1854 serving up some of the greats from Abe Lincoln to John Lennon, yup it as old as you grandmother and her mama. But your grandmother would not have been able to enter this New York institution before 1970 because they have been an all boys club up to then. But before you step into McSorley's Old Ale House there are still couple laws one must abide by 1. Two beer selections: Light or Dark ($4.50) no mixed cocktails here! 2. You have to buy 2 at a time (glasses are about 8-10 oz.) 3. Don’t be an CheapAss, tip well the servers work hard for it and you know they deserve better. Besides those 3 basic rule of thumb McSorley's is a lovely place to stop by during late afternoons on the weekdays where you see a handful of tourist, beer connoisseur and locals grabbing couple of drinks before dinner. But the real reason I love McSorley's Old Ale House is the surroundings that consumes me, there is no jukebox to speak of no TV and no cell phone, everyone who goes to this Old Ale House understands and appreciates the art of talk. One can really appreciate the non-web 2.0 vibe. The food is good, I wouldn’t say it’s the best food, but it is definitely cheap and filling. I usually stick to the burgers if hamburgers aren’t your thing they also have shepherds pie, and saltines with mild white cheese comes w/ raw onions – they keep things real simple here. And Like I said there are only 2 kinds of beer, light and dark the dark is a bit on the sweeter side, reminds me of dark molasses with a blend of tartness and the light is a lighter version but not as sweet.
