REVIEWS:
Sometimes in the food industry homage should be made whether it’s to the 4 star restaurants or the small little bodegas with the best tacos in the city. Sau Voi Corporation is just that place, opened around the mid 80’s by a refugee entrepreneur Richard Lee, started making Bánh mì serving up downtowners, opening New Yorkers eyes to the greatness of Vietnamese heroes. Thanks to Sau Voi Corporation other tiny Bánh mì shops all over Chinatown as well as Midtown (of all places), have enjoyed successes, Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich shop, Nicky’s Vietnamese sandwiches to Saigon Bakery. With humble beings Sau Voi started as a 200 square feet and is still to this day a small hole in the wall, Every inch of the wall is covered wiyh Vietnamese CDs, DVDs, and cigarettes boxes. With very little room to spare the sandwich station across from the lottery counter, has 2 little ladies making the Bánh mì and the other taking orders, I don’t know how it’s done. But once you wrap your lips on the soft French style baguette (that taste more like a soft hoagie roll), mingling with tender bbq pork and freshly cured cucumber and carrots – you’re in heaven. And in the words of Wayne's World fans, Star Wars geeks, and all food geeks alike, we are not worthy.
RANTS & RAVES:
The Bánh mì are great all are the priced from $2.25 - $4.00. For the first time I also got some appetizers Goi Du Du Kho Bo ($2.25) Shredded Green Papaya shrimp salad with fish sauce and the Banh Uoc ($2.25) Vietnamese Shrimp rice roll with Shrimp cake, bean sprouts and fish sauce. Nicely priced but by the standard of a well feed foodie the sauce tends to be on the sweet side. But over all very cheap, fast, good portion.
