So Midtownlunch.com has been chatting up Taj Delhi Chat in Midtown, located 1013 6th Ave. (btw. 37+38th). Being a fan of Indian food and snacks I had to check it out for my self to see what all this “chaat” was about. According to MTL “chaat is actually just a generic term for a savory Indian snack, usually sold on the street, and consisting of cumin, amchur (mango powder), red chilies often mixed with some fried snack in combination with any of the following - potatoes, onions, tomatoes, yogurt, tamarind chutney, cilantro, cilantro chutney, and mint chutney.” All together there are 31 vegetarian items on the menu, which can be very intimidating for any new comers, so I chose something familiar, #4 samosa chat. Unfortunately it was all sold out, (not surprising since samosa is probably one of the more popular breakfast eats in India), so I asked for some recommendation by the owner, and he decided that I would like the #2 Aloo Chole chat for $4.99. The Aloo Chole not only sounds kool but it is made up of potato (Aloo), garbanzo beans (Chole) and Chat meaning mixed with tomatoes, onions, yogurt and tamarind. This was one snack I could get used to, had a bit of everything, a little sweet, a little salty, and spicy. I also like the fact that my mouth was entertained by all the different textures from the tomatoes, onions potato, it was one big party in my mouth.
RANTS & RAVES:
One random thing about Chaat, was while preparing the dish, the cook but it in the microwave for about a minute, which only made the dish luck warm. I thought the dish would taste better if it was cool, like a nice summer sack. For a Full Translation on the menu go to Midtownlunch.com
