It’s true what all the foodies say about Queens NY, as a borough it kicks ass in the Asian Food department. For all the three years living in Manhattan Chinatown, I thought we had it all, dim sums, meat on a stick, and the hand pulled noodles. But I knew deep down in my heart that Queens had Manhattan beat, as writer Julia Moskin points out in the New York Times article … “Everything tastes different in Flushing, Queens, the best neighborhood in New York for tasting the true and dazzling flavors of China. The dumplings are juicier here, the noodles springier, the butter cookies flavored with a bit of salty green seaweed, as a cookie at a French bakery might be sprinkled with fleur de sel. The perfume of roasted Sichuan peppercorns and the sound of dough slapping against countertops lures visitors down to the neighborhood’s subterranean food malls, where each stall consists of little more than a stove and a specialty: slow-cooked Cantonese healing soups; fragrant, meaty Sichuanese dan dan noodles; or Fujianese wontons, no bigger than a nickel, that spread their fronds in clear broth.” Who could argue with that? So we ventured out to Flushing on a Saturday for a little dim sum, our answer to brunch. Ocean Jewel Seafood Restaurant came highly recommended by most foodies on the web so we took the chicken bus (which anyone can take for $2.50 one way, from Manhattan Chinatown to Flushing). As we were seated the ambiance was already a bit different, not as rushed as Manhattan, the tables a bit more spaced out and definitely clean. But that was just the start as Moskin says the food is most positively superior to that of Manhattan, Ocean Jewel Seafood doesn’t skimp on any of the ingredients and doesn’t rush the preparation of the food. Which sometimes is more then apparent in Chinatown, Manhattan. I could really go on and on about all the different types of dim sum we had but I think the pictures will talk for themselves. As for the price it is what you’ll find in Chinatown we ordered 9 different dishes and our bill came out to $28!!!!! CraZy cheap!!!! and I have to say CraZy good!!!
